Paul, Trump is Chamberlin 1933. All he needs to do to settle this is land our army in Ukraine, declare a cease fire, recognize Russian ownership of what they hold, and declare that if Russia violates the cease fire, it will be at war with the U.S. That's what Reagan, who I worked for, would have done. best, Larry
Ugh? Are you aware of the Plant in Tilburg Netherlands [~500 employees] and several others in Germany [> 10,000 employees]?
But gloating over “retribution” toward US company [Tesla, e.g. proxy for Musk] is what the EU does and has been doing. Perhaps Nordsk III is in the works to meet the EU’s energy needs. Or current economic woes best attributed to this Post-Biden administration….sorry the Vaseline jar has been thrown in the recycling bin — pretty sure someone will divulge it was the wrong bin!
Hello Professor Kotlikoff. I agree, the US stock market is a big risk. We have moved our money into international stock funds, gold etfs, and redeemed our iBonds. We have some 5 year TIPS we need to move to a brokerage account. Professor Krugman says they are at risk if the govt starts meddling with the real inflation rate. There is also this bogus idea of converting US Treasury Bills into 100-yr Bonds, known as the Mar A Lago accords. That would be a selective default. I can’t imagine the horror of a selective default on US debt. Financial confidence in the US will be wiped out for a generation. Another great depresssion would be likely as trillions of assets were suddenly repriced and liquidated.
Downloading our SS statements is a great idea.
I also agree Europe, Canada, and Mexico will spontaneously boycott American goods and firms. Very unsure what China will do.
I hate to think that we have, Debra, but I think two rulings by the Supreme Court have broken the balance that has allowed our country to absorb changes in political attitude. The first is the Citizens United case. The other is the ruling giving the president immunity from basically everything he does in office. There are no consequences whatsoever now for president and any billionaire he wants to involve in doing anything they want. I’m not sure how you come back from that.
I realize crossing the Rubicon infers permanence. Perhaps my optimism that we can find our way back is ridiculous— not sure as everything seems that way now.
Zelensky came not to sign but to speak to America in an attempt to gain their support over and above what the Trump plan was to achieve peace vs ongoing war. Larry you may do well with economics but lousy in political actions & assessments. Don’t worry many many folks missed what Zelensky was doing. Well discuss tariffs at a later date albeit they are an interesting conundrum.
Unless you’re also a Russian sycophant, which too many in the Republican Party seem to be, you understand that what Trump is offering is exactly nothing to Ukraine. If Trump’s aim is to simply give Ukraine to Putin, which it seems to be, then the Trump deal works. If our aim is a nation is not to have Putin continue to demonstrate aggression toward Europe and the former Soviet satellites, then there needs to be some guarantee of security and someway to come back economically from the destruction that Putin has visited upon Ukrainian infrastructure.
We have supported Ukraine over & above. All of sudden Trump arrives and now Europe wakes up. Zelensky came to this meeting with his own agenda. An agenda that would allow him to keep war going and wanted the US to back him up. Wow! The bigger picture Putin was well aware of the Trump plan. A plan that considered both Russia & China and it would keep them at bay while returning something to the US from Ukraine for the billions +++++ that they have received. Keeps China and Russia from some high priority resources. We have procured titanium +++ from Ukraine (Russia) since the early 60s. So point is the picture is way bigger than Zelensky desire continue battling Russia. 😡😡😡
There's no practical definition of 'over and above.' We've given Ukraine old equipment from our inventory and are paying our defense contractors to give us new, state of the art gear.
This subterfuge is Russia's plan, not Trump's. It gives Putin - who has burned out his own resources to the point where he needs to rent North Koreans - a needed pause. Meanwhile, Putin is targeting and undermining Moldova and Lithuania as he did Georgia. Putin's plan won't keep Russia and China at bay. It gives Putin a win where he effectively lost, and is a strong signal to China to go ahead and invade Taiwan.
I miss the days when Republicans actually understood geopolitics and were concerned about about preventing war through cheap alliances and soft power.
Europe has been awake, and in overall support to Ukraine it has outspent the USA (not yet in military terms, though that too is now rising sharply, but in total for infrastructure and humanitarian aid - not transactionally like your charming New York property hustler and sexual predator). The only area where it has been asleep is in trusting the USA to behave like a decent partner. And whatever the conciliatory words being spouted by Starmer and Macron at the moment, Europe will move on.
By the way, those billions from the USA went to support US jobs and defence industries, to rearm the armed forces with the latest equipment while the old stuff was sent to Ukraine. No problem with that, but it's hardly as altruistic as you make out.
America fave real money and equipment. Zelenskyy and gang stole something over 20% off the top and sold it. All of Europe altogether gave a loyalty less than what we gave. Watching Zalenskyy, obviously coked out, lecturing America on how we are going to suffer if we don't continue the deranged idea of starting ww3 over Ukraine was very clarifying.
Europe would rather be invaded by millions who hate Europe than be able to actually defend itself.
So backing a crooked drug addiction is what you like? Go for it.
Huterson7, My friend, you are absolutely out of your tiny mind. Zelenskyy is a man of integrity and honour. I don't know the Zelenskyy you think you know.
I was honestly the worst thing I’ve seen in foreign policy in my lifetime. It was sickening and it made me ashamed of our American government today. JD Vance is a smarmy prick.
The War in Ukraine could have been avoided, and will end under terms and conditions that could have been easily negotiated PRIOR TO HOSTILITIES.
Instead of aiding negotiations behind the scenes, Biden ran around like chicken little screaming “The Russians are coming, the Russians are coming!” while dangling in front of Ukraine the carrot of a NATO membership that would and could never come.
Well thanks to that the Russians did come, and then destroyed much of Ukraine while killing thousands. Biden used Ukraine as cannon fodder for a proxy war with Russia.
Boycotts are fine but i wish I would hear more leaders talk about the need to vote. We're in this mess because too many sat home during the 2016 election and last Nov. Voting is SO much easier than trying to correct mistakes after the fact.
The indifference and cynicism in our society is what's contributing to the downfall of our country. Too many look at their vote as a 'gift' to the candidate - instead of looking at their vote as a way to place your finger on the scale of how better off your family, pocketbook, or values will be in 4 yrs. If both candidates are bad (1st dont complain about the choices unless you participated in the primaries), then vote for the candidate that will cause the least damage to your family/concerns... and then get involved! Call their offices, email them, attend their townhalls & and remind them they work for YOU & you will give them a pink slips if they dont deliver.
Stop looking for the perfect candidate! Again be strategic. They'll start to pay attention. Bad politicians are elected by good people who dont vote. Participate in EVERY election! Realize the winning candidates - at local, state & national - are the ones who will decide how much to tax you & determine how your taxes will be spent. Stop giving up your vote, and then complain when you don't like the results.
Btw, Most politicians couldn't care less about marches and mediocre boycotts. Why? Because they'll still have a job when it's over. The only thing that will put fear into a politician is the thought of losing an election.

Already happening...Tesla sales down 45%...

Agree 100 percent, Larry

Have we crossed the Rubicon? Those who have a good sense of US history say absolutely. I hope there’s a way back.

Elaborate please

Debra, NOW is not the time to even entertain the idea of giving up. We will find our way back.

Catherine,
Those words you are using don't mean what you think they mean.
You want to start WWlll? Huh? You don't have the cards, you don't have the cards. Show some respect...and wear a suit!
I was honestly the worst thing I’ve seen in foreign policy in my lifetime. It was sickening and it made me ashamed of our American government today. JD Vance is a smarmy prick.
OG,
Watch the entire video, and not the curated part. You are making a fool of yourself.
Yeah and before judging the Titanic’s last cruise a failure, read the accounts of how lovely the cruise was going prior to hitting the iceberg.
Big difference. Trump saw the iceberg and made sure everyone sees it as well.
Probably because he IS the iceberg
Yeah, stopping Eurpean reactionaries from starting WW3 is so mean of the US.
Responding to Eurpean trade policies is not starting a trade war.
Your take on Ukraine is idiotic.
The War in Ukraine could have been avoided, and will end under terms and conditions that could have been easily negotiated PRIOR TO HOSTILITIES.
