I will say it is quite absurd that at age 64, after a bike ride, I cannot purchase a beer without my ID, but another individual has the "right" to walk out of that same store with an armload of items, unpaid for, with employees watching but forbidden to intervene and also has the "right" to vote and drive a vehicle without ID.
What is the basis for our freedom in the West? There is strong evidence, philosophically as well as historically, that the freedom found in Western Civilization comes from Judeo-Christian teachings, which slowly transformed our institutions and shone at pivotal moments in history, including the birth of an independent USA.
Bereft of a proper college education in Western Civ, which was not required as far back as when I attended college in the 1970s, I came to complete my learning of the above from reading the book "The Book That Made Your World (How the Bible created the Soul of Western Civilization) by the absolutely brillant Indian philosopher and humanitarian, Vishal Mangalwadi. It took this outsider of the West to surgically expose how we came to enjoy the freedoms which are under erosion and under threat today.
While I can appreciate the brillance of Sociologist Patterson, it is regrettable that he did not consider to incorporate some of the historical Christian teachings of Harvard into his presentation, a school that was once founded to train the nation's clergy. A secular humanist approach has dominated Harvard for years and it is a betrayal of that school's roots. To be fair, this shedding of (proto-) evangelical roots started 220 years ago and was completed over 150 years ago.
