The Fed balance sheet is now relevant since they discovered QE. Fed is not as bad as other central banks. I expect Warsh will reduce BS but cut rates so somewhat an equal and offsetting process as we muddle thru 2026. IMO Fed should only have 1 mandate of price level/inflation and a nice stable fiat currency.

Sort of related. The Fed publishes its balance sheet every week Federal Reserve Balance Sheet: Factors Affecting Reserve Balances - H.4.1 https://www.federalreserve.gov/releases/h41/

Here is a real short version based on the 1/29/26 report

Total Assets $6.59T

Total Liabilities $6.54T

Capital $0.05T

Most of the assets are securities, including $6.3T of Treasuries and $2.0T of MBS. On the Liability side, Notes (currency) are $2.4T and Deposits are $4.0T ($1.0T from the U.S.G. and $2.9T from banks (reserves)).

The sore thumb item is capital. The Fed wants the banks it supervises to carry capital equal to 10% of their assets. The Feds capital is less than 1% of its assets. If the Fed were a commercial bank, its regulator would put it into receivership.

Of course the market knows this. Look at the price of gold which is, right now, about $4,700/oz. The Feds Gold Certificate Account is $11B, but it is valued at a fixed price of $42.22/oz.

Look what happens to the Fed's balance sheet if Gold is marked to market. The $11B becomes $1.23T The Feds Balance sheet becomes

TA $7.81T

TL $6.54T

Capital $1.27T

And the Fed is well capitalized at 16% of total assets.
