Been a long time since my first economics course but what I read here seems like it ignores reality in favor of theory. It appears to downplay government misinformation & mismanagement of taxpayers funds. Mismanagement of energy production, infrastructure & policy directing priorities that are politically influenced not cost, impact & ROI. Once was told by a professor and to date continue to recognize that the math used in economics is not necessarily the right

answer! It has a tendency to not consider indirect consequences. Just some thoughts from a bystander 😊

I know that my position is politically unacceptable to both sides, but I think the situation is dire. Trumps position on tariffs and his mistreatment of friendly countries like Canada, Mexico, Denmark, and Panama will hurt the economy a lot. but all of that is just a sideshow compared to the looming deficit/debt crisis.

There is no way that cutting discretionary spending, can possibly close the deficit or prevent a debt crisis. The major entitlement programs are also not fixable in the short or intermediate terms. Social Security pensions to current beneficiaries cannot be cut. there would be riots. reforming the Medicare/Medicaid system will take years. Remember most of those dollars go to wages and the people who collect them will fight like tigers to keep their well paid jobs, and they are now an enormous constituency including the doctors, nurses, and techs and their families who depend on their wages.

We must have a dramatic increase in Federal Tax revenue. Fiddling with the income tax won't move the needle. We have been fiddling with the income tax for the last century and we have not much changed the amount collected as a percentage of GDP. Here are my suggestions.

Social Security needs an infusion of cash. Impose the OASDI tax on all earned income without regard to the 90th percentile cap, currently $176,100. We will need to impose a cap on the AME calculation, but that is fairly easy.

The real fountain of money is a VAT -- Probably at a 20% add on rate. But maybe higher. Both parties will hate it. But, we can't have a welfare state without one.

I also think that we should stop trying to limit CO2 emissions by subsidizing politically popular technologies regardless of whether they work or are economically feasible. Repeal the fraudulently names Inflation Reduction Act and all other technology subsidies. Impose a carbon tax on fossil fuels at the wellhead or import terminal. Back it up with a carbon tariff that would not be imposed on countries with effective carbon taxes of their own. There will be no rebates. CO2 control is secondary. The Government needs the money.

Will this be painful. Yes. Will it cause a recession? Most likely. We have been maxing out our credit cards and living the high life too long. Going cold turkey is painful.

But, the pain will not be a fraction of that which would be caused by a bond market collapse and the hyperinflation that would follow.

The forecast is cloudy and a 100% chance of pain.
