The European Union just made a momentous decision. It indefinitely froze sanctioned Russian assets. This will permit the EU to lend Ukraine massive amounts of money — up to $240 billion over time — to permit Ukraine to continue defending itself against Putin’s aggression.
The loan is more than half the size of the $400 billion in aid provided to Ukraine since Russia’s invasion almost four years ago. It’s also almost twice the $130 billion in aid provided by the US to Ukraine — aid which ended with President Trump’s re-election.
In September 1938, Neville Chamberlain, to his lasting infamy, sold Czechoslovakia down the river to Hitler. He did so declaring that he’d delivered “Peace for our time.” What he delivered was World War II and 80 million deaths.
Trump is showing by word and deed that he is Putin’s puppet. Whether he is the Manchurian Candidate, as some allege, whether he is being blackmailed by Putin, as some allege, whether he is out to pad his pocket, as some allege, or whether he’s trying to claim the Nobel Peace Prize, as he craves, Ukraine is not his to sell. Nor is it any longer his to sell out.
Trump can scream, he can threaten, he can bribe, and he can deride. It won’t matter. Ukraine will not surrender at his command any more than it has surrendered to Putin’s bullets, shells, bombs, drones, missiles, and kidnappings. A country that has bled for its freedom longer than we fought for ours in WWII isn’t going to be cowed or bullied. As the EU just made clear and as Ukraine’s courage and military prowess manifests, Trump doesn’t have the cards to make Putin’s dreams come true.
Trump has tried his best to undermine our democracy, our rule of law, our free press, our economy, our educational system, our military, our alliances, our belief in each other, our civility, and our decency. The country has had enough. Even his most ardent followers are now seeing him for what he is — a disgrace to himself, a disgrace to our founders, and a traitor to his country.
